Do you need a paid tool for YouTube keyword research?

Summary

Not for learning about your own channel. YouTube Studio already shows the search terms people used to find your videos, how often your thumbnails were shown and clicked, and how long people watched. What a paid tool adds is a modeled keyword score and a way to watch other channels, and vidIQ's free plan covers a little of that: three keyword results per search and up to three tracked competitors.

What vidIQ's free plan gives you, and where it stops

vidIQ's Keyword Score combines two things: how much competition a search term has on YouTube, and vidIQ's estimate of monthly searches for it over a rolling 30 days. The score runs from 0 to 100 in five bands, from "very low" to "very high." It's vidIQ's model, not a number YouTube publishes.

On the free plan you see three results per keyword search, and some keyword lists show only three or four entries. Competitor tracking is capped at three channels. Boost raises that to 20 and Max to 50, and both remove the per-search limit on keyword results.

AI features run on monthly credits: 150 on Free, 1,000 on Pro, from 2,000 on Boost and from 6,000 on Max. Unused credits don't roll over.

What Studio already tells you for free

YouTube says search results are ranked on relevance, engagement and quality. Relevance covers how well the title, tags, description and video content match the query. Engagement includes signals such as watch time for a video on a given query. Quality looks at which channels show expertise and authority on the topic, and whether they can be trusted. YouTube doesn't sell better placement in organic results, and your own search and watch history can shape what you see.

Studio's Analytics tabs map onto those signals:

  • Reach shows impressions, impressions click-through rate, views, unique viewers and the YouTube search terms that led to your content.
  • Engagement shows watch time, average view duration and engaged views.
  • Audience shows monthly audience, subscribers and the share of new, casual and regular viewers.
  • Trends shows the top searches among your audience over the last 28 days, plus content gaps: searches where viewers can't find enough good videos.

YouTube began rolling out an updated Studio in July 2026, so the Trends tab may look different from older screenshots, and some Trends insights are limited to certain countries, languages and devices.

Team pricing

vidIQ Enterprise is $799 a month for up to five channels and three full-access seats. Each extra channel is $49 a month and each extra user $69 a month, so seven channels shared by four people come to $966 a month. Enterprise Pro, at $2,500 a month, covers up to 20 channels and eight seats.
