Do you need a dedicated internal linking tool, or does your SEO suite already cover it?
Summary
If you already pay for Semrush or Ahrefs, their site audits will find orphaned pages, broken internal links and pages buried too deep, and Screaming Frog's free version does much of the same on up to 500 URLs. A separate tool only adds something when you want link suggestions while you write in WordPress, or links inserted automatically from rules you set. Those tools are priced by site, from $97 a year for Link Whisper on one site and $118.80 a year, before VAT, for Yoast SEO Premium.
Finding the problems
Semrush's Site Audit has an Internal Linking report. It shows how many clicks each page sits from the home page, how many internal links each page sends and receives, which pages have none at all, a list of link issues and the pages passing the most Internal LinkRank. Semrush suggests keeping important pages within three clicks.
In Ahrefs Site Audit, the Link Explorer report lists every link it crawled. Filter internal links to targets that were not found and you have your broken internal links. Another filter shows link targets the crawler skipped, with the reason.
Screaming Frog, the desktop crawler, counts internal links, reports crawl depth and anchor text, and calculates a Link Score for each URL. Without a paid license, each crawl ends at 500 URLs.
All three tell you what is wrong. None of them edits your pages.
Adding links inside WordPress
Yoast SEO Premium shows related posts in a sidebar box as you write. It picks them by comparing the 20 most prominent words in your draft with every other post on the site, and you drag or copy the link into your text. Premium also has an orphaned content workout for posts that nothing links to. One subscription covers one site.
Link Whisper does internal linking and nothing else. Its yearly plans are Starter at $97 for one site, Growth at $197 for three, Pro at $297 for ten and Agency at $497 for 50, with 2,000, 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 AI credits that refresh each year. Every plan includes auto-linking, a Google Search Console connection and tools for fixing 404 errors and orphaned pages. On a WordPress multisite network, each site counts toward the limit, so a five-site network needs Pro.
The free Link Whisper plugin on WordPress.org gives AI link suggestions in the editor, which you copy and paste yourself, plus a report of internal and external links per post. Bulk linking, keyword-based auto-linking and broken link reports need the paid version. Link Whisper says auto-linking only runs on keyword rules you configure, and suggestions change nothing until you approve them one by one.
