What do content optimization tools charge for, and will a higher score help you rank?

Summary

You are mostly paying for a quota of documents, and each vendor counts it differently: Surfer by the year, Clearscope by drafts per month, Ahrefs by documents per month. The content score is the vendor's own calculation, not something Google uses, so raising it does not guarantee a better position. It is useful as a checklist while writing and not as a measure of results.

The score belongs to the vendor

Each tool scores a draft against the pages ranking for the query, using its own method. Google says relevance is decided by hundreds of factors, and no third-party grade is among the things it describes. Pages with high scores can stall and pages with low scores can rank. After publishing, the numbers that show whether a page worked are the clicks, impressions and average position in Search Console.

Three ways of counting

Surfer's plans are billed yearly. Discovery is $49 a month for 120 documents a year and one seat. Standard ($99) and Pro ($182) both give 360 documents a year; Standard has three seats and tracks 25 AI prompts weekly, Pro has five seats and tracks 50 prompts daily. Peace of Mind ($299) is unlimited under a fair-use policy, with ten seats. Creating a document and optimizing an existing one draw from the same quota, and on annual plans the quota resets once a year or when you change plans. Use it up by June and there is nothing left until renewal.

Clearscope bills monthly. Essentials ($129) and Business ($399) both include 20 drafts a month. Business raises topic explorations from 20 to 50 a month and both Pages and Tracked Queries from 50 to 300. Users and projects are unlimited on every plan, and there is no contract.

Ahrefs sells AI Content Helper at $99 a month for 50 documents, and Content Kit at $299 for 250 documents plus AI Content Grader. Its pricing page lists Content Kit as an add-on from $99 a month. Inviting team members to collaborate is limited to Enterprise accounts.

Semrush puts content optimization in Pro+ and above, at $299 on monthly billing or $248.17 a month billed annually, and does not publish a document limit for it.

A team publishing 40 pieces a month

Take three people writing 20 new articles and refreshing 20 old ones each month. That is 480 documents a year. Surfer's 360-document plans fall short, which leaves Peace of Mind at $299 a month, or $3,588 a year. Ahrefs' $99 tier covers 50 documents a month, enough for the volume, but three people working together puts you on an Enterprise account. Clearscope's 20 drafts a month cover the new articles with no seat limit, and its pricing page does not say which allowance a refresh of an existing page uses.
