How much SERP analysis can you do without paying for a tool?

Quite a lot. A Google search shows you what kinds of pages rank and which search features appear, and Ahrefs' free SERP Checker adds link and traffic metrics for the top 10 results without an account. You start paying when you need metrics on many results every month or a record of how the results changed over time.
Reading the results page for free
Search the keyword and look at what comes back. Are the top results product pages, category pages, guides, tools, forum threads or videos? Do big brands fill the page, or do smaller specialist sites get in? Is there an AI Overview, a map pack, a People Also Ask box? None of that needs software.
Ahrefs' free SERP Checker covers the numbers side for one keyword at a time. It takes a keyword and a location and returns the top 10 results with Domain Rating, URL Rating, backlink and referring domain counts, and an estimate of each page's organic traffic, plus a difficulty score. It also shows the ranking history of the current top five pages. It is built for spot checks, not for comparing 50 keywords in an afternoon.
Where Ahrefs starts charging
The Starter plan, $29 a month and renewable monthly only, includes Keywords Explorer and Site Explorer on 200 credits a month, one month of historical data, no exports and no extra users. Its SEO Toolbar can show up to 800 search results a month with SEO metrics.
Lite, at $129 a month, raises that toolbar allowance to 40,000, adds SERP history and keeps six months of historical data. Ahrefs notes that the toolbar's real limit shrinks as you use Site Explorer and Keywords Explorer in the same month.
Standard, at $249, adds SERP comparison and SERP updates and stretches history to two years.
One detail catches people out. Keywords Explorer fetches the top 10 live, while Site Explorer shows a cached results page that goes down to position 100. So the two can show different orders for the same keyword.
When history pays off
Today's search shows today's results. If you want to know when a competitor moved in, or when a query that used to return product pages started returning articles, you need results captured before the change. Starter's one month only lets you compare this month with last month. Six months on Lite or two years on Standard lets you line up seasons and past ranking swings side by side.
