Can a free rank checker tell you where you rank right now?
Summary
For a handful of keywords checked now and then, yes. Ahrefs' Keyword Rank Checker needs no sign-up: you enter a keyword, a domain and a country, and it returns the position. Semrush and SE Ranking offer similar free checks. None of them keeps a history for you, and that is where paid rank tracking comes in, at roughly $100 to $140 a month on each vendor's entry plan.
Why searching it yourself gives a skewed answer
Google says the factors that decide relevance can include the searcher's location, language and device. Its own example is a search for bicycle repair shops, which shows different results to someone in Paris than to someone in Hong Kong. Search Console's help adds search history to the list. So the position you see in your own browser is your position, under your conditions. A checker that pins the country gives the same answer each time you ask.
The free checkers
Ahrefs has two free tools, and neither asks you to register. The Keyword Rank Checker takes a keyword, a domain and a country. The SERP Checker takes a keyword and a country and shows the top 10 results with Domain Rating, URL Rating, backlink counts and referring-domain counts for each page, which helps when you want to see who you are up against as well as where you sit.
Semrush's free Keyword Rank Checker handles one keyword per check. It shows your position, the page that ranks, the top 10 results and the SERP features on the page. If you need more than one keyword, it points you to its paid Position Tracking tool.
SE Ranking's checker has the most settings: country, city, language and desktop or mobile, with the domain field optional. That makes it the one to use if you care about a specific city.
Search Console is measuring something else
Search Console's average position takes the topmost position your site held each time it appeared and averages it across impressions. Google's example: if one query shows your site at positions 2, 4 and 6, that query counts as 2; if another shows it at 3, 5 and 9, it counts as 3; the average is 2.5. A search where your result was never shown adds nothing, and every link inside a carousel or an AI Overview shares that element's single position.
Google answers the question "the report says 5 but I see 8 when I search" directly: the report is an average of all searches, and any single search can differ because of search history, location and other variables. A checker measures one search under one set of conditions, so a gap between the two numbers does not mean either is wrong.
When checking by hand stops making sense
Twenty keywords checked every week is about 80 lookups a month, plus copying the results into a spreadsheet. Paid rank tracking does that recording for you. The entry plans differ more than their prices suggest:
- Ahrefs Lite, $129 a month: 750 keywords, updated weekly.
- Semrush SEO, $139 on monthly billing: 500 keywords, updated daily.
- SE Ranking Core, $129 a month or $103.20 a month billed annually: 2,000 keywords, updated daily.
The rank tracking guide breaks these down by cost per tracked keyword.
Work out your own number: the SEO Tools Cost Calculator finds the cheapest published plan for your sites, tracked keywords and users.
