Which SEO tasks can you automate, and what does it cost?

Summary

Scheduled crawls, rank alerts and routine data pulls can usually be automated with the tools you already have, at no extra charge. The bill grows with data volume. Google's Search Console API is free but returns at most 25,000 rows per request, and only the top rows. Pulling everything means a BigQuery export, and BigQuery charges once you pass its free usage level.

The free layer has a row ceiling

The Search Analytics API lets you group Search Console data by query, page, country, device and date. Each request returns between 1 and 25,000 rows, with 1,000 as the default. Google says the API "does not guarantee to return all data rows but rather top ones," sorted by clicks. On a site with tens of thousands of queries, the long tail is what drops out.

Search Console's bulk export sends a daily copy of your performance data to BigQuery. Everything is included except anonymized queries. A few details catch people out:

  • The first export arrives up to 48 hours after setup and covers only that day. There's no history from before setup; for that you go back to the API or the reports.
  • Data accumulates forever unless you set a partition expiration, and Google says it should be 14 days or longer.
  • Storage and queries are free up to BigQuery's free usage level and billed above it.

Alerts come with the subscription, on the vendor's terms

Semrush lets you add up to 10 custom triggers to a Position Tracking campaign. When organic positions change enough to trip one, Semrush sends an email to the address on the account, and that's the only channel. Position Tracking doesn't connect to Slack or Microsoft Teams. Site Audit can re-crawl daily, weekly or only when you run it by hand, and Semrush points to its Zapier integration for any other schedule. The SEO monitoring guide covers which alerts are useful and which just add noise.

API access is metered separately from the plan

Ahrefs includes API and MCP access from the Lite plan up, but caps the rows each request can return: 100 on Lite, 250 on Standard, 500 on Advanced, and no cap on Enterprise. Exporting 1,000 backlinks on Lite takes ten requests.

SE Ranking sells API access as an add-on to its Core, Growth and Enterprise plans for $45 a month, billed annually only. It comes with 250,000 credits a year, the Data API, the Project API and MCP access. Annual credits are granted up front and expire at the end of the billing cycle. Project API calls draw on your plan's project limits, not on credits. There's also a standalone API plan for people without an SE Ranking subscription: $179 a month, annual billing only, with 1 million credits a year.

Work out your own number: the SEO Tools Cost Calculator finds the cheapest published plan for your sites, tracked keywords and users.
