Does everyone on an in-house SEO team need a paid seat?
Summary
No. Only the people who run research, set up tracking or launch audits need a seat in a paid SEO tool, and in the six-person example below that is two. Writers, developers and managers who only need to see how the site performs in Google can be added to Search Console for free, up to 100 non-owner users per property. The number of operators, not the headcount, decides which paid plan you can use, because vendors cap how many users each tier can add.
Who gets what
Picture a team of six: an SEO lead, a content lead, two writers, a developer and a marketing director.
- The SEO lead and content lead research competitors, pick keywords and run audits. They need paid seats.
- The writers want clicks and impressions for the pages they own. A restricted user in Search Console can view most data.
- The developer checks indexing and submits sitemaps. A full user in Search Console can do both.
- The director wants results once a month. A shared report covers that.
Only a property owner can add people in Search Console, so someone on the team has to hold that role.
The ceilings on paid seats
Ahrefs includes one user on every self-serve plan and caps the add-ons. Lite ($129 a month) allows two more users at $40 each, Standard ($249) allows five more at $60, and Advanced ($449) allows ten more at $80. Lite also limits each user to 1,000 credits a month, while Standard and above are unlimited, so three people sharing Lite are each working inside that limit.
SE Ranking counts manager seats. Core ($129 a month, or $103.20 on the annual rate) includes one, Growth ($279, or $223.20) includes three, and extra seats start at $16.
Semrush lists additional users from $45 a month but doesn't say on its pricing page how many users each plan already includes.
What the six-person team pays
With two operators, the paid part costs $169 a month on Ahrefs Lite, $309 on Ahrefs Standard, or from $145 on SE Ranking Core. A third operator still fits on Lite, since Lite allows three people in total, and makes SE Ranking Growth, with three manager seats built in, a closer comparison. A fourth operator pushes Ahrefs users to Standard.
The director's view can come from reports instead of a login. SE Ranking Growth includes guest links for sharing. Ahrefs Report Builder allows five reports on Lite and Standard and 15 on Advanced, with a $99-a-month add-on for more. Every viewer who gets a seat instead adds that seat's monthly fee to the bill twelve times a year.
