Why is the bill for an SEO tool higher than the plan price?
Summary
Because people, AI tracking and reporting are mostly priced separately, and some of those charges start on their own. Ahrefs bills extra users you haven't prepaid for automatically, and if pay-as-you-go credits are switched on it charges for anything beyond your plan's limits. In the three setups below, the total ends up between one and a half and two and a half times the plan price.
Three real configurations
All three use monthly billing.
- Ahrefs Standard for three people, with Report Builder and the Growth prompt package: $249 + $60 × 2 + $99 + $100 = $568.
- Semrush Starter for three people, with AI Visibility for the two added users and one Pro Report: $199 + $45 × 2 + $99 × 2 + $20 = $507.
- Moz Pro Medium covering 12 sites and 2,300 tracked keywords: $179 + two extra campaigns at $10 + four 200-keyword blocks at $20 = $279. Large costs $299 and already includes 25 sites, 3,000 keywords and three users.
Charges that start without a new purchase
Ahrefs is the clearest example. Its FAQ says additional users who aren't prepaid are charged pay-as-you-go, and that if you enable pay-as-you-go credits and data, you're charged automatically once usage passes the plan's limits. Prepaid limits are used first. Pay-as-you-go purchases such as export rows, crawl credits and API units stay usable for three billing months, counting the current one.
Custom AI prompt tracking works the same way. The packages cost $50 for 2,500 checks, $100 for 7,000 and $250 for 25,000 a month. Overage runs $0.020, $0.015 and $0.010 per check, billed at the end of the month. A check is one prompt on one AI platform in one location, and Claude uses eight checks per update. The AI search visibility guide covers how to estimate prompt volume.
Charges that scale with headcount
Extra seats cost $40, $60, $80 or $100 a month on Ahrefs depending on the plan, $45, $80 or $100 on Semrush, and a flat $49 on Moz Pro. Ahrefs Starter can't add users at all.
Semrush shares plan limits across everyone on the account, with two exceptions. The AI Visibility Toolkit ($99 per user) and the Traffic & Market Toolkit ($289 per user) have to be bought for each person who uses them. The $99 AI Visibility subscription also covers only one brand domain, so each additional domain is another $99.
Add-ons you choose
Moz Pro lets you buy only the limit you're short on: $10 per extra campaign, $15 per 50,000 crawled pages, $20 per 200 tracked keywords, $10 per 10,000 keyword queries, $25 per five keyword lists and $25 per five link-tracking lists. Extra AI prompts cost $50 per 100.
Ahrefs sells Report Builder ($99), AI Content Helper ($99, or $299 as Content Kit with its grader), Brand Radar AI (from $199) and Project Boost ($20 or $200 per project) on top of any plan. Semrush charges $10 a month for each Base Report, $20 for each Pro Report and $90 for Lead Generation.
Taking things off the bill
On Ahrefs, upgrades take effect immediately, while downgrades and cancellations wait until the end of the current billing period. Refunds are generally not offered, though a monthly subscriber who hasn't used the service can ask for one.
On Semrush, removing someone from the account doesn't remove the paid seat. That takes a request to support. An annual Semrush plan is paid for the whole year upfront, not spread over twelve payments.
