What can you use instead of Surfer SEO, and what does it cost?
Summary
The usual candidates are Clearscope, Ahrefs AI Content Helper, and the content tools built into SE Ranking and Semrush. For one person, none of them costs less than Surfer Discovery at $49 a month billed yearly. Teams are a different story: Clearscope includes unlimited users from $129 a month, while five seats on Surfer means the Pro plan at $182.
If you write alone
Surfer Discovery gives one seat and 120 documents for $49 a month, billed yearly; Surfer's pricing page shows yearly billing only. The closest alternative in price is Ahrefs AI Content Helper at $99 a month for 50 documents a month. Ahrefs also has a free tier with one document a month, which is enough to try the editor.
If five people share the tool
Surfer prices by seats. Standard ($99) has three, Pro ($182) has five and Peace of Mind ($299) has ten. Standard and Pro both include 360 documents, so for a five-person team the extra $83 buys seats, 200 tracked pages instead of 50, and daily AI prompt tracking.
Clearscope doesn't count users or projects at all. Essentials is $129 a month for 50 pages, 20 topic explorations, 20 drafts and 50 tracked queries. Business is $399 for 300 pages, 50 explorations and 300 tracked queries, with drafts still at 20 a month. There are no contracts and a 14-day free trial. For a team on Essentials, the cap that matters is 20 drafts a month; head count doesn't.
Ahrefs is weaker for teams here, because sharing in AI Content Helper is available on Enterprise accounts only.
If you already pay for an SEO suite
- SE Ranking Core ($129) includes 25 content articles, with extra articles from $39.20.
- Semrush adds content optimization on Pro+ ($299); the $139 SEO plan doesn't include it.
- Ahrefs sells Content Kit at $299 a month: 250 documents, AI Content Grader, and Content Inventory marked as coming soon.
