Which Asana plan do you need for Gantt charts, portfolios, and goals?
Summary
You need Starter, at $10.99 per user per month on annual billing, for timeline and Gantt views and reporting dashboards. Portfolios and Goals are Advanced features, at $24.99 per user. The free Personal plan leaves out both time-based views, so it works for tracking tasks but not for planning a schedule.
How the views differ
Every Asana project can be shown five ways: list, Kanban board, calendar, timeline, and Gantt chart. The tasks underneath don't change, so contributors can work from a list while the project lead plans in Gantt.
The Gantt view is the one project managers usually go looking for. It lets you set a target schedule and then watch how actual progress lines up against it. Timeline is lighter. It lays the work out along a date axis so you can see what overlaps and what comes first. Neither is available on Personal.
When Starter stops being enough
Starter covers a team running its own projects. The need for Advanced usually shows up one level higher, when someone has to watch several projects at once or tie them to targets:
- Portfolios group related projects so a department head can see their status on one screen.
- Goals let you set objectives and key results for the company, a team, or one person, over a quarter, a half, a year, or a custom period, and connect each goal to the projects and portfolios that support it.
- Approvals and proofing and built-in time tracking also sit on Advanced.
What the jump costs an eight-person team
Assuming all eight people are on the same plan and billed annually, in US dollars before tax:
- Starter: $10.99 × 8 × 12 = $1,055.04 a year
- Advanced: $24.99 × 8 × 12 = $2,399.04 a year
Portfolios and Goals add $1,344 a year at that size. Month to month, the rates rise to $13.49 on Starter and $30.49 on Advanced, about 22 to 23 percent more. Our guide to annual versus monthly billing covers when paying monthly makes sense despite that premium.
