Does connecting Asana to Slack, Salesforce, or your own systems require a certain plan?

Summary

Only some of them do. The Slack and Google Drive integration pages list no plan requirement, while Salesforce, Tableau, and Power BI connections start at Advanced. The REST API works on free workspaces too, but each token gets 150 requests a minute there against 1,500 on a paid plan, and service accounts, which you need for audit logs and organization-wide exports, are an Enterprise feature.

Slack

The Slack app is built by Asana and covers most of what people do in both tools:

  • turn any Slack message into a task, assign it, and file it in a project
  • comment on tasks, mark them complete, or list tasks with the `/asana` command
  • get updates when tasks are created, completed, or commented on, and status updates for projects, portfolios, and goals
  • click "Summarize task" on a pasted task link for an AI summary, if your domain settings allow AI features

It also works in reverse. An Asana rule can post to a Slack channel or message a teammate when something happens in a project.

Google Drive

You can search Drive and link files to tasks, preview who owns a file and what comments are open on it, and get notified when someone comments in Docs, Sheets, or Slides. One catch: that notification only works when Drive is added as an app through the project's Customize menu. Files attached with the paper clip icon on a task don't send comment notifications.

Salesforce, Tableau, and Power BI

These three are listed together on the pricing page as Advanced features. The Salesforce integration runs through Asana Rules, so an event in Salesforce, such as an opportunity closing as won, can create or update Asana tasks, add comments or collaborators, or map revenue fields into Asana. The older Asana app on the Salesforce AppExchange is deprecated and no longer supported.

API limits developers run into

Limits are counted per authorization token, in one-minute windows:

LimitValue
Requests per minute150 on a free domain, 1,500 on a paid one
Search API60 per minute
Concurrent requests50 GET, 15 POST/PUT/PATCH/DELETE
Duplication, instantiation, export jobs5 concurrent per user
Page size1 to 100 objects

Go over and you get HTTP 429 with a Retry-After header giving the wait in seconds. Rejected requests still count against the quota. There is also a cost-based limit tied to how heavy each request is, which Asana says most developers never hit. The batch endpoint lets you send up to 10 actions at once, but each one counts separately.

Authentication and the Enterprise line

A personal access token from the developer console is the quickest way in. OAuth is the better fit when many people will sign in to your app with their own accounts. Service accounts give full access to all data in the organization, including private user data, and they are required for the audit log, organization exports, and SCIM endpoints. Only super admins can create them, and only on the Enterprise tier. Users on view-only licenses get limited API access.

SAML single sign-on also starts at Enterprise. We compared what SSO costs across vendors in a separate piece.
