How much does a vanity business phone number cost?

Summary

Expect a one-time fee plus the usual monthly charge for a number. Four providers print the price: RingCentral, Phone.com, Talkroute and Grasshopper.

RingCentral charges $30 once and $4.99 a month. Phone.com charges $4.99 a month per number, plus a one-time fee that starts at $15 for an 800 number and $10 for an 888 number and runs up to $49 for other toll-free prefixes.

Talkroute charges $20 once for a custom local number its support team finds for you; toll-free vanity numbers are picked in its control panel at the normal number fees. Grasshopper prints no separate vanity fee.

One vanity number added to an existing plan costs $74.88 to $108 in its first year at these four, cheapest at Phone.com for an 800 number.

The cheapest route is to make the number your plan already includes the vanity one. Grasshopper says its plan number can be a vanity toll-free number, and Talkroute lets you pick toll-free vanity numbers straight from its control panel.

A vanity number is an ordinary local or toll-free number whose digits spell something, like 1-800-FLOWERS. It routes and bills like any other number on the plan, which is why most of the cost is the same monthly number charge described in How much does it cost to add another phone number to a business phone plan?. What changes is the one-time fee, which pays for searching out or reserving a number people want.

Talkroute splits the two kinds. A toll-free vanity number can be searched directly in the control panel. A local number with a particular pattern has to be requested from support, who search by hand, and that is what the $20 fee covers. Phone.com notes that some local numbers carry a one-time acquisition fee as well, without listing amounts.

The first year of one extra vanity number

The first year of one vanity number bought as an extra number: the lowest one-time fee plus twelve months. Phone.com's fee is the floor for an 800 number; Talkroute's is a custom local number. Before taxes. Calculated, not quoted.
ProviderFirst year, one extra vanity number
Phone.com$74.88
Talkroute$80
RingCentral RingEX$89.88
Grasshopper$108

These totals assume the vanity number is an extra one, on top of the number the plan already includes. If it replaces the included number instead, the monthly charge drops away at Grasshopper and Talkroute. Grasshopper prints no fee for that at all; Talkroute says its standard activation fee applies, without giving the amount on that page. If you already own a vanity number with another carrier, you can usually bring it with you; Does it cost anything to port a business phone number? covers what that costs. For toll-free numbers more generally, How much does a toll-free number cost a small business each month? adds the per-minute charges.
