Does it cost anything to port a business phone number?
Summary
Porting a number in is free at 8 of the 13 providers checked, and they say so in writing: RingCentral, Quo, Dialpad, Ooma Office, Phone.com, Talkroute, Grasshopper and 8x8. The other 5 do not print a fee at all; JustCall shows its fee in the app once you start the request.
Fees turn up on the way out. Quo is the only provider that says porting is free in both directions. Talkroute charges $50 a number to port a toll-free 800 number out of an account less than 90 days old. Most of the rest are silent in their port-out instructions.
The fee you are most likely to pay is the old carrier's, not the new one's. Ask the company you are leaving before you start; the FCC says a porting fee is something you can ask to have waived or negotiated.
Don't mistake consumer prices for business ones. Ooma's home service charges $39.99 a number to port, and personal Google Voice charges $20 to bring in a mobile number and $3 to unlock a number for leaving. Ooma Office and Google Voice for Workspace list no such fee.
The real cost of a switch is usually the overlap. You keep paying the old service until the port finishes, and numbers beyond your plan's allowance start billing, $5 a month each at Quo and Talkroute.

Scroll sideways on a phone.
The table reads each provider's own porting articles, not third-party guides. Where the in or out column says "No fee stated", the instructions for that direction say nothing about a charge. That is not the same as free, and if a fee matters to you, ask before you file the request. Vonage's port-out cell is empty for a different reason: its business support site blocks automated reading, so the port-out instructions could not be checked at all. Aircall is left out because its help-center porting articles no longer load.
Where a fee does show up
The one published port-out fee among business plans is Talkroute's, and it is narrow. A toll-free 800 number leaving an account that is under 90 days old costs $50 a number to release. Accounts in good standing past 90 days pay nothing, and local numbers are free to leave at any age.
Dialpad's free porting covers US and Canadian local and toll-free numbers. International numbers carry a fee that varies by country and is spelled out in its country porting guides.
The prices that most often confuse a search are the consumer ones. Ooma's rates page lists "Porting/Change Fee: $39.99 per number" for its home phone service and "Free" for Ooma Office, in two blocks of the same page. Google Voice's personal help page says the $20 charge applies to porting in a mobile number and the $3 charge to unlocking a number for porting out, with no unlock charge if the number was ported in to begin with. The Google Workspace admin pages for porting business numbers in and out mention no charge.
Then there is the carrier you are leaving. Grasshopper, Phone.com and Quo all tell new customers to check for a port-out fee at their current provider, which is where a charge is most likely to come from. The FCC's guidance is that companies may charge one, and that you can ask whether it can be waived.
What a switch costs besides the port
The FCC, and several providers in the table (Dialpad, Zoom, Google and Talkroute among them), say not to cancel the old service until the number has moved. Until then you are paying both bills. If the old plan was annual, check its cancellation terms before you choose a date; the old company cannot refuse to release the number because you owe it money, but you still owe it. Can you keep your business phone number when you switch providers? covers the order of steps and how long a port takes.
Numbers can add a monthly line too. Quo includes one number per user and bills $5 a month for each number beyond that, starting 14 days after the port. Talkroute includes a set number per plan and charges $5 a month for each extra. If you are bringing a main line plus a fax line and a toll-free number, count them against the plan's allowance before you port; How much does it cost to add another phone number to a business phone plan? has the per-number prices side by side.
