How much does a phone number in another country cost?

Summary

Where a business phone provider prints a price, a number in another country costs $4.99 to $10 a month on top of your plan. Phone.com charges $4.99 for local, toll-free, international or custom numbers, Zoom Phone $5 for an additional number including "international premium numbers", Aircall US$6 for each additional number, and JustCall says most of its international numbers cost $6 to $10.

Only 4 of the 11 providers we checked print that price. RingCentral, Dialpad, CallHippo and Vonage sell numbers abroad without printing what a local one costs. RingCentral does print its international toll-free number: $14.99 a month plus a $30 setup fee, or $209.88 in the first year.

Quo and Grasshopper sell only US and Canadian numbers, and Google Voice's number comes with each user's license in 14 countries, with no separate number price.

The number is an add-on, not a plan. You still pay for at least one seat, and calls to and from that country are priced separately from the number itself.

Who sells numbers abroad, and at what price

The country lists are not the same thing at every provider. RingCentral's support table marks 77 countries where it sells an international virtual number and a separate, longer list for international toll-free; its marketing page says "99+". JustCall says 70+, Aircall 100+ and CallHippo 150+. What matters is whether your one country is on the list and which kind of number is available there, because a country can offer a toll-free number but no local one, or the reverse.

Some countries also ask for paperwork. JustCall says numbers in "regulated markets" take three business days, and Aircall says you may need to provide documentation to activate a number.

What one number costs over a year

The first-year cost of one number in another country where the provider prints a price, next to the entry seat it is added to. The number is an add-on: you pay for at least one seat as well. RingCentral's row includes the $30 one-time setup fee. Seat prices are annual-billing figures from this site's dataset unless marked; calculated, not quoted.
ProviderA number a monthFirst year for the numberEntry seat a month (per user)
Phone.com$4.99$59.88Basic: $15
Zoom Phone$5$60US & CA Unlimited: $16
Aircall$6$72Essentials: $30
JustCall$6 to $10$72 to $120Team: $29
RingCentral RingEX (international toll-free)$14.99$209.88Core: $20

On the cheapest printed price, a year of one number abroad comes to $59.88. The seat beside it is the bigger cost: at Aircall you also need three licenses and at JustCall two, so the number is rarely the deciding line in the budget. Where the seat is cheap and you only need a presence in one country, the add-on is worth comparing directly; where you need people working in that country, look at a plan built for it, such as Zoom's Global Select, which bundles a local number and domestic calling in 40+ countries but does not print a price.

The order is by the first-year cost. Whether a provider pays this site a referral fee does not affect it.

The number is not the calling

A London number lets UK customers reach you on a UK number instead of dialing the US. It does not make your calls to the UK cheaper, and an inbound call to that number is carried to wherever you answer it. Outbound calls to the country are billed at the provider's international rates, which How much does it cost to call Mexico, the UK, India or the Philippines from a US business phone? compares. If your staff will travel rather than sit in that country, Can employees use the company phone number while they're abroad? covers what works and what doesn't, including emergency calls.
